Reel 1: Two local men are among 19 new astronauts selected today by nation's space agency.
Segment 1 (silent): Shots of Chauncey Court street sign; exterior of 682 Chauncey Court, San Jose; and J. Irwin name plate hanging from house. James Irwin is one of the astronauts selected.
Segment 2 (sound): Interview with neighbor Jack Dare, who is asked what kind of astronaut Irwin would make. Says Irwin is a very highly intellectual man, of good moral character, devoted to his family. Exemplifies the type of man we need. Claims that as a small boy, Irwin said he'd like to be the first man on the moon.
Segment 3 (silent): Exterior of 643 McCarty Avenue, Mountain View, home of second astronaut Bruce McCandless. McCandless herds his children in the living room, his wife enters the room, the family attempts to sit on the sofa but the children don't appear to want to sit still.
Segment 4 (sound): Interview with McCandless and his wife Bernice in their dining room. McCandless is asked how he feels, what made him want to contribute to the space endeavor, and Bernice is asked how she feels and whether she would like to accompany him to space.
Reel 2:
Segment 1 (silent): International Association of Machinists picket outside FMC's Ordnance Division entrances on Coleman Avenue in San Jose.
Segment 2 (silent): FMC Corporation executives meet with Morgan Hill residents to explain plans for ordnance testing site in hills northwest of town. Shots of men pointing at diagrams and maps on large poster board while residents each lunch at long tables and take notes, followed by shot of road lined by orchards - the proposed testing site.
Segment 3 (silent): Fatal car accident at night after auto carrying Mary Sapsis and Jerome Zwefel plunged from Seventeenth Street onto Bayshore Freeway. Twisted car wreckage, bodies being places into ambulances.
